Making It Tough On RV'ers

A middle aged couple from the USA has just done something really stupid and something that has the potential for making life more difficult for all of us who tour Mexico. They rolled their motorhome over in Northern Mexico and when the police investigated, they found TWO TONS of marijuana hidden in a false ceiling of the rig. Gee, I wonder why it tipped over!

It remains to be seen if this incident will make for more and slower inspections of RVs along the way but it sure does not help the rapport we have built up over the years. When we pull up to an inspection station there is usually just a quick glance at our passports and maybe a quick look inside and we are on our way. Everyone is smiling and friendly as they do not expect old farts like us to be drug smugglers. This incident may change things and with so many places in an RV to hide stuff, inspections could take a lot of time. People are such idiots!

  2. Yes, I saw that. A commenter on another forum said, "I feel sorry for the dog".

  3. Won't make any difference. This has happened before, this one just happened to make the news and the scare-meisters at rv.net picked up on it. At one military check last year the guy in charge showed me pics of a motorhome they had stopped and found loaded with drugs. He said their drug sniffing dog went nuts!

Anyhow, nothing to hide, nothing to worry about.

I think what was striking about this story, including Croft's point of what may be the enhanced scrutiny of RV's, was the stupidity of putting two tons of anything, much less dope, in the top of an already high center vehicle.

  6. I can't see it making any changes. I recall one boarding in Mexico 5 or 6 years ago when two officals came inside, one whoose sole purpose was to poke at the ceiling of our motor home wirh a rod. We had wondered why they weren't checking the tall cupboards for rifles. Where is it hidden has been a mantra for years. Nothing changes except maybe the Police Chief in a large Mexican city heading over the border into USA but caught with a ton of pot in his vehicle.

  7. "Go Big or Go Home" - They did go big but it could be a while before they make it back to San Diego.

I like the anon. comment about putting 2 tons of whatever in the ceiling! Of course the rv isn't mentioned, if it were a bus conversion I guess it could take the load. I don't see it in a 30' class C. You going to go for it Croft? LOL

  8. Last year we went through at Nogales and on the Mexican side we were boarded. Every wall knocked on to check for ???. It took time then so I can only image what will happen this year. I think I'd rather they bring in the drug sniffing dogs.

  9. I'm always happy when I see the dogs. I always invite them to bring the dogs inside and they actually did that once.

  10. I see no impact. Not any different than all the cars that cross the border doing the same thing. Maybe a closer inspection but no harm to be done.
